On-page SEO gets a reputation for being complicated, but a large chunk of it is just making sure basic, boring things are actually in place. Here's a short checklist that covers the fundamentals most sites still get wrong.
1. Check your meta title and description actually exist
It sounds too simple to matter, but missing or duplicate meta titles and descriptions are still one of the most common issues found on real sites, especially ones that grew organically without a content process. A meta tag generator makes it fast to produce a properly-sized title and description for every page instead of leaving search engines to guess.
2. Give search engines structured context
Structured data (schema markup) doesn't change what a human sees on the page, but it gives search engines explicit, machine-readable context about what the page is โ a product, an article, a recipe, a FAQ. Adding it is one of the few SEO changes that can visibly change how a result looks in search (rich snippets, star ratings, etc.) without touching your design. A schema markup generator handles the JSON-LD syntax so you don't have to memorize it.
3. Make sure your sitemap reflects reality
An outdated sitemap that still lists removed pages, or is missing new ones, actively works against you. Regenerating it after any significant content change, and validating it afterward, is a five-minute task that prevents search engines from wasting time on dead URLs. Use a sitemap generator alongside a sitemap validator to close the loop.
4. Read your content the way a search engine parses it
Keyword stuffing is an old, mostly-dead tactic, but keyword density still matters in a more subtle way โ it's a useful signal for whether a page is actually focused on the topic it claims to rank for, or wandering. Running a page's text through a keyword density checker is a quick sanity check, not a target to game.
5. Don't ignore word count entirely
There's no magic number, but pages that are extremely thin on content relative to what a topic reasonably requires tend to underperform pages that actually answer the question. A simple word counter paired with your own judgment about whether the topic is actually covered is enough โ no need to hit an arbitrary target.
None of these steps require a paid SEO suite. They're all things you can check and fix directly, for free, before spending time or money on anything more advanced.
