Percentage calculations look identical on the surface but actually cover several distinct questions, and mixing up which formula applies to which question is the most common source of wrong answers — not the arithmetic itself.
"What is X% of Y" vs. "X is what % of Y"
These are two different questions that use the same numbers in different roles. The first ("what is 20% of 150") multiplies; the second ("30 is what percent of 150") divides. Confusing the two is the single most common percentage mistake, especially under time pressure like an exam.
Percentage increase and decrease aren't symmetrical
A value that increases by 20% and then decreases by 20% does not return to its original number — the second 20% is calculated on a different (larger) base than the first. This trips people up in discount-then-markup and salary-hike-then-cut scenarios specifically because the intuitive assumption (that they cancel out) is wrong.
Percentage difference vs. percentage change
Percentage change compares a new value to an original, directional baseline (up or down from where you started). Percentage difference compares two values without treating either as the "original" — useful for comparing two competing options rather than tracking change over time. Using the wrong one produces a technically-different number even with the same two inputs.
Marks and grade percentages
Converting a score out of an arbitrary total (like 437 out of 500) into a percentage is simple in principle, but doing several of these by hand across multiple subjects — and then averaging them correctly — is where manual calculation gets tedious and error-prone.
