Open Graph tags (used by Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp and most other apps) and Twitter's own Card tags control the title, description and image shown when a link is shared — and unlike most page content, you can't casually spot-check this by just visiting the page yourself. The only way most people find out it's broken is after posting it somewhere and seeing a blank or wrong preview.
Image dimensions matter more than people expect
An og:image that's too small, the wrong aspect ratio, or missing entirely often gets replaced with a generic placeholder or nothing at all by the platform rendering the preview — a 1200×630px image is a safe, widely-supported baseline that avoids most cropping issues across platforms.
Preview before you post, not after
Checking a live link's preview usually means actually pasting it somewhere and waiting for a platform to render it — slow, and sometimes cached in a way that makes fixes hard to verify quickly. Previewing the tags directly, before anything is even live, catches obvious problems immediately.
