What does the Compare Documents do?
Text, JSON, XML, CSV, HTML, Markdown and YAML comparison with word-level highlighting. Free, runs entirely in your browser — no upload, no sign-up, no data stored. It's part of TeckForge's document comparison collection, sitting alongside related tools you can reach from the sidebar.
How to use the Compare Documents
- Open the Compare Documents in your browser.
- Paste or upload the first version of the file or text into the left panel.
- Paste or upload the second version into the right panel.
- Review the highlighted differences — additions, deletions, and changes are marked automatically.
Tips for getting a good result
- Paste the older version on the left and the newer version on the right so the highlighted colors (additions vs. deletions) line up the way you'd expect.
- For very large files, scan the summary of change counts first, then jump to specific sections rather than reading line-by-line.
- If the diff looks noisier than expected, check whether whitespace or line-ending differences are being counted as changes.
Frequently asked questions
What file types can I compare?
The Compare Documents accepts common text and document formats — check the tool page for the exact list, since supported formats vary slightly by tool.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No, the comparison runs locally in your browser — neither file is sent to a server.
Does it show word-level or line-level differences?
Both are typically shown — line-level changes for context and word-level highlighting so small edits inside a line are easy to spot.
Does it flag formatting-only changes separately from content changes?
Text-based comparisons focus on the actual content; purely visual formatting differences may not always be distinguished from content edits.
